Technical 3D-printing ceramics in medical technology

Due to Lithography based Ceramic Manufacturing (LCM) we are able to realise channels and high-complex grid structures up to 100 µm. Moreover, the design freedom of the method enables us to develop and produce components for medical instruments unthinkably being made from this material previously or scarcely being manufactured by conventional methods in this high quality.

Important features of technical 3D-printing ceramics for medical technology:

  • biocompatible
  • electronically insulating
  • high-temperature-resistant
  • chemically resistant
  • wear-resistant
  • can be sterilized
  • scratch-resistant
  • corrosion-resistant

Surgery and diagnosis

During medical examinations and treatments as well as during operations the perfect coordination between technology and patient is important. In minimally invasive surgery endoscopes, for example, are used which dispose of a tissue-cutting instrument closing the blood vessels immediately by electric current. The current, however, must not charge the patient so that besides stainless steel insulating technical ceramics are used, too. Due to their high wear resistance and their good cleanability they are perfectly suitable for surgical instruments. Also technical 3D-printing ceramics are mostly used for casings of X-ray image intensifiers, vacuum chambers for radiotherapy, rotary X-ray tubes, ultrasonic cleaners, lithotripters, micro-surgical ceramic scalpels, endoscope nozzles and as tools for the manufacture of catheters.

Medical sensors

In medical technology sensors and micro sensors play a very important role as they deliver data without them the high reliability of the diagnosis and the treatment of patients would not be possible. Sensors made of technical 3D-printing ceramics are used, for example, for the measurement of pressure, acceleration, temperature, pulse, vibrations, fluid conditions and humidity.

Modern micro reactors: small miniature laboratories

Due to technical 3D-printing ceramics even micro reactors with fluid connections and complex channel guidance are feasable. In those tiny miniature laboratories it is possible already to perform serum analyses, polymerase chain reactions and DNA-sequencing in lowest volumes in the μl-range at extremely high throughput rates.
