General

Polytetrafluoroethylene (shortened to PTFE) is a polymer out of tetrafluoroethylene. This semi-crystalline fluoroplastic with the highest degree of fluorination is a non-flammable thermoplastic showing a very good anti-adhesion property. Due to its outstanding properties, this high performance polymer has been established as an indispensible material for many areas of application in the modern industrial society. Steinbach AG, for example, produces flat seals and moulded parts from PTFE virginal according to DIN standard.

Properties

PTFE virginal is resistant to acids, ozone, weather conditions and ageing and disposes of a variety of further positive properties like a broad temperature range from -100°C to +250°C, inertness, low thermal conductivity, particular stiffness, good electrical insulating properties and an extremely low friction coefficient with very good slip properties resulting from there. In addition, PTFE virginal is non-flammable, physiologically harmless and disposes of an almost universal chemical resistance. Almost all known chemicals, solvents, lubricants and hydraulic media are unable to harm the material. Only alkali metals and elemental fluorine attack the material at high pressure and at high temperatures.

As PTFE virginal is not an elastomer and therefore shows only little or no elasticity, sealing elements made of this material are activated by elastic preload elements.

Typical applications of PTFE virginal are turned parts, milled parts, seals, insulations and semi-finished products in the areas of electrical engineering and pneumatics/hydraulics as well as in engineering, apparatus and vehicle construction.
