EPDM general

Ethylene propylene diene rubber or also called ethylene propylene diene (monomer) rubber, shortened to EPDM, is an elastomer being among the high-quality synthetic rubbers and consisting of the macromolecules ethylene, propylene and diene. It is known, for example, by the trade names BUNA-AP®, KELTAN® and NORDEL®. The synthetic rubber is characterised by its very high resistance to various impacts. EPDM is mainly used for weather-resistant sealing films and for the manufacture of insulation panels, fill material, flat seals, and hoses. Deriving from this elastic material, Steinbach AG produces low-wear quality seals and moulded parts according to the European DIN standard.

Properties

The proportion of the individual chemical monomers and the selection of the diene allows to specifically influence the properties of EPDM. Depending on the compound EPDM is resistant to ageing, ozone, UV radiation, weather influences and biogas. Additionally, the elastomer is insensitive to esters, ketones, alcohols, alkalis and acids. It is only affected by mineral oils and greases. Also, EPDM shows a good tensile strength, elongation at break and rebound elasticity.

Moreover, the material shows a very high temperature resistance so that the operating temperature range of EPDM extends from -60°C to +160°C. That means that, depending on the mixing ratio, the elastomer is also resistant to hot water and steam. The peroxide cross-linked EPDM A-KT 70-00, for example, disposing of drinking water quality, shows an excellent hot water resistance. However, it is not flexible at low temperatures.

Benefits

  • applicable for low-wear seals
  • resistant to acids and alkalis
  • good tensile strength, rebound elasticity and elongation at break
  • fire-resistant
  • heat-resistant
  • flexible at low temperatures depending on the mixing ratio
  • resistant to UV radiation and ozone
  • weather-resistant

Range of uses and areas of applications

Typical applications of EPDM are, for example, round cords, hoses, profiles and seals in the fields of application like engineering, plant construction, vehicle construction and food industry. Due to its very good hot water resistance EPDM A-KT 70-00 can also be used for seals and hoses in washing machines and dishwashers.

Frequently asked questions about EPDM

What is an EPDM seal?

An EPDM seal is an ethylene-propylene-diene rubber. It belongs to the group of synthetic rubbers and is weather-resistant.

What does 70 hardness mean for EPDM seals?

The Shore hardness 70 ° indicates the hardness of the rubber. The standard hardness is 65-70 ° Shore.

Is EPDM food safe?

The black standard EPDM seals are not used in the food sector. However, there are special white EPDM seals which are suitable for the food sector. We offer EPDM seals in white with a thickness of 1-5mm.

Is EPDM a rubber?

Yes, EPDM is a rubber.

Is EPDM UV-resistant?

Yes, EPDM is uv-resistant.

Is EPDM a plastic?

No, EPDM is not a plastic.
